Purim is the holiday celebrating how the Jews of Persia were saved from extermination at the hands of Haman (an evil advisor to the king). Queen Esther persuaded her husband, the king, to save the Jews and punish Haman instead. You may read this story in the book of Esther in the Bible. Three blessings are recited before hearing Megillat Ester recited during synagogue services. Purim is a happy festival with an almost carnival atmosphere. It is a time to remember that God works all things together for good for those who are called according to His purposes. It's also a time of special parties and children put on plays at the synagogue. Groggers (noise makers) and other devices are often used to drown out the name of Haman.
The holiday Purim is on the Hebrew date Adar 14 which is:
2011: March 19-20
2012: March 7-8
2013: February 23-24
2014: March 15-16
2015: March 4-5
